Floss

Is your floss safe for my pet?

Our Vegan Xylitol Mint and Cranberry Flosses are not safe for your pet since they do contain xylitol which can be highly toxic to dogs and other animals. Our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss does not contain xylitol and could be used for your pet, but please, we beg you, do not let them chew or eat the floss since that can harm your furbaby.

Is your Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss vegan?

Since vegan means using or containing no animal products and silk comes from a silk worm, our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss is not vegan. We wanted to be able to offer a completely biodegradable floss and, at the moment, silk is our only option. We didn't want to leave out our vegan friends so we do offer two vegan flosses that are made from nylon.

How do you harvest the silk for your Natural Silk Floss?

Our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss is sourced in cooperation with the CORSEDA Farm Cooperative in Cauca, Colombia. The CORSEDA Cooperative is a family owned and operated initiative that focuses on redirecting worthy sources of livelihood back to the native populations of Colombia in a sustainable and enriching manner. Spun by hand, the silk we use is pure, natural silk thread that is a 100% biodegradable material and comes from silk worms. Silk is used to make clothes, floss and many other products throughout the world.  Silk thread is one of nature’s strongest natural fibres and the only natural fibre strong enough to be made into floss. In order to harvest in an efficient, effective, and safe manner, the silk cocoons are boiled to allow the whole cocoon to be unraveled as one continuous thread, permitting a much stronger thread and reducing the number of cocoons needed to make viable silk thread. The result is a 100% natural product that can biodegrade and causes no impact on the environment after use. We here at RADIUS believe this is a very important offering for our consumers and our environment. For consumers who are looking for a vegan option, we do also offer Vegan Mint and Vegan Cranberry flosses which are made from nylon rather than pure silk.

Why do you use silk for your Natural Silk Floss?

Silk thread is one of nature’s strongest natural fibres and the only natural fibre strong enough to be made into floss. Silk Floss is a 100% natural product that can biodegrade and causes no impact on the environment after use. We here at RADIUS believe this is a very important offering for our consumers and our environment. For consumers who are looking for a vegan option, we do also offer Vegan Mint and Vegan Cranberry flosses which are made from nylon rather than pure silk.

Do you use a natural mint for your Vegan Mint Floss?

We're kind of against artificial and synthetic ingredients here at RADIUS so unlike other conventional/mass brands that use synthetic mint, we only use natural mint. Specifically Mentha x piperita L commonly known as peppermint.

Do you use a petroleum based nylon to make your Vegan Flosses?

Our nylon comes from a petroleum derivative. Trust us, we would LOVE to have a different material which is not oil based, unfortunately we have not been able to find another material that has the properties needed for a flossing thread and that is not oil based.

Do your Floss Sachets contain the same amount of floss as your Floss Spools?

Our Floss Sachet packs do contain less floss than our spools but as with most travel sized items (and any item), packaging is often more expensive than the product itself. The travel box, the biodegradable packaging and “single-serving”/”single-use” sizing all add up to make the product more expensive. However, when tested we found that people wasted less floss when using single-serving sizes as compared to using a spool of floss, subsequently reducing the total quantity needed to purchase.

The 18" of floss inside each Floss Sachet is the dentist recommended amount to use each time your floss.

And there's no more plastic dispenser!

Is there a difference between the floss in your Floss Sachets & Floss Spools?

Nope, the floss is the same whether you're using a Sachet or spool. It just depends on which packaging style you like best.

Does your floss have an expiration date?

Nope. Use it forever. It doesn't expire.

Is your Vegan Cranberry Floss coated in cranberry juice?

It's not the actual cranberry juice, but rather the cranberry essence from cranberries. The essence contains the phytochemicals that makes cranberries naturally antibacterial and beneficial. NO sugars or sweeteners are in the essence.

Are all of your flosses a sponge floss?

Our Vegan Mint and Vegan Cranberry Flosses are both a sponge floss. Our Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss is a round floss.

Why is your Organic Silk Floss now called Natural Silk Floss?

Have no fear, our Natural Silk Floss is exactly the same as our Organic Silk Floss you've seen before. We're currently going through an Organic re-certification process so we've changed to name to Natural Biodegradable Silk Floss until we are re-certified.

As much as we try to be environmentally friendly as possible, there are certain things that we cannot change - like US FDA laws for example. The reason all of our floss spools are packaged in an inner recyclable plastic container and then put in a cardboard package is because floss is considered a medical device by the FDA and they require it to be packaged in a plastic container when sold in traditional retailers such as grocery/drug. Since we sell in both natural stores and traditional stores we must abide by this law. We are always looking for new, innovative, green ideas for packaging and are actively looking for alternatives including separate packaging for natural retailers. One alternative that we offer is our Floss Sachets. It’s the exact same floss as our spooled floss except it’s packaged in single-use travel size quantities. Each sachet has enough floss for one use and you can purchase them in packs of 20. These are packaged in biodegradable paper. The reason we can sell this floss in a non-plastic container is because the paper sachets are air-tight and that’s an acceptable alternative for the FDA (we are also looking at this idea for our spools).

We encourage all of our customers to please recycle the inner plastic container.

Do your flosses contain corn or other allergens?

Our flosses do not contain corn, glutens, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, GMO’s, unnatural colouring, phthalates, parabens, or other harmful additives.

Is your Natural Silk Floss biodegradable?

Biodegradable and compostable. How 'bout them apples?! Our Natural Silk Floss will biodegrade/compost in 60-90 days in a bacteria rich environment like water or a landfill

Why does your Natural Silk Floss spool contain less floss than your other flosses?

It's due to a supply issues and cost. Our Silk Floss is hand spun from natural silk and because of this the manufacturing process can take longer than our other nylon flosses. To speed up the manufacturing process and to avoid having our Silk Floss constantly out of stock, we reduced our Silk spools to 33 yards of floss rather than 55 yards like our other flosses.

Why does my floss look different?

We switched our Cranberry and Mint Floss from a round floss to a soft sponge floss in 2012 because it was softer, did not cut the gums and could fit better between tight teeth. An alternative option is to try our Natural Silk Floss which is a soft round floss.
